FYI: Dreamfall Chapters is on Kickstarter

Ragnar Tørnquist’s new studio, Red Thread Games, launched their Kickstarter campaign for Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey today. Chapters is the long-awaited third game in The Longest Journey adventure game series, from which this blog takes its name. The series is known for excellent writing, strong female protagonists in April and Zoe, and a number of queer characters as well. The Kickstarter is asking for $850,000, of which over $280,000 has already been raised as of this writing. If the game is funded, Red Thread plans to have it ready for release in 2014.

  1. Tørnquist has been consistent in saying he planned to return to TLJ with Dreamfall Chapters after his commitment to TSW was fulfilled. He has my monies.

  2. I’ve played and enjoyed the first game (even if it’s rather obtuse in the beginning, where I am). Never played the second, but every review I read noted the immense cruelty of that game’s ending and – to a lesser extent – the story in general. If this game happens, I hope it’ll end everything satisfactorily.

Just one day and it accomplished more than half its goal. There’d need to be something on the developer’s end for this to fall into vaporware.

  3. I would hardly call the ending of Dreamfall cruel. The player should know — in hindsight, at least — from the beginning that one of the major events would happen, as should the player know from TLJ (specifically the brief encounter with Lady Alvane) that two of the other major events are not what it seemed. Zoe did what she was tasked to do, much as April did in the first game. One would expect that April’s story’s continuation into Dreamfall would lead players upset with the ending to realise that potentially downer endings are not just going to be dropped, but one has also read enough gripes about Dreamfall to know that not many other players share one’s optimism. : /
