Bell gargoyle from Dark Souls.

Happy midweek everyone!

  • What games are you playing this week?
  • Would you recommend those games to other Border House readers?
  • What games have you ranting?
  • Are any of those games listed ones that you want to see covered on the site?

This week has been a busy one for me again. In my free time I played a little bit of World of Warcraft and went back to Dark Souls.

What have you been playing?

I finished whipping through Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. Overall I’m pretty pleased with it; I really liked the puzzles and I enjoyed the larger role that Emmy got to take. I feel like it wrapped up the trilogy quite well and, of course, laid the groundwork for Layton v Phoenix. I found Aurora charming and narratively satisfying (even if I have some issues with the narrative tropes employed for both her and Emmy). In general, a great entry in the series.

So now having done that, I’m back to Bravely Default, having gotten my performer job on and am now headed to the mines in Chapter 4.

On a whim, I’d bought a choose-your-own-adventure Mac game called Choice of Romance: Affairs of the Court. It’s basically a Regency court romance adventure in totally-not-Spain. I didn’t have very high expectations, but I ended up enjoying it quite a lot; the game asks you to choose your gender and appearance and the gender of the people you wish to romance (though sadly it didn’t offer a bi option–although I did choose to be a woman interested in women and it did offer me a chance to make flirty eyes at a prominent male character) and then gives you quite a story to race through. I read very quickly and I whipped through a first playthrough in about 2.5 hours; it lets you save at the end of each act in case you want to go back with different choices. I was generally quite pleased and it was definitely worth the $3 or so I paid for it; I’m given to understand that the company’s other efforts are uneven and that they’re available for mobile, as well.

More Skyrim. Argonian thief/assassin. Putting all my points into Stamina, avoiding combat like the black death. Haven’t died yet! Let’s see if I can infiltrate the bandit camp so I can assassinate my next target. And where the hell are all the fences?! The Nords must hate stolen goods.

Also getting further in The Banner Saga. Just lost my first fight. That sucked. Really feeling the pressure: want to level characters, but I have really low morale and almost no supplies. This can’t end well.

Dark Souls II (PS3). Beat this (no co-op). Liked it a lot overall. It improves several game mechanics over it’s predecessors, but falters in a few other areas. I’m in position to get the platinum trophy after a few quests and grinding, but some repetition will be involved so I’m taking a break to play other games.

Final Fantasy X (Vita). Received my copy of this a few days ago, and I’m already 10 hours in. Enjoying it a lot more than I expected (and I figured I’d like it). The music is super amazing T.T

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (DS). Now on chapter 7. Still just doing a few puzzles each week.

Path of Exile (PC). Level 29 and on Act III. Still fun, though I’m noticing the gear up to this point is all incredibly bland.

Anime: finished Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Log Horizon. Still watching Eden of the East, Rainbow.

Final Fantasy 13 on PS3, I like it! Though that could be because it’s my first FF game (i know). I’m getting into jRPGs.

Speaking of jRPGs I’m also playing Persona 4 Golden on Vita, the action is finally starting to ramp up and I’m getting into it.

Also recently dusted off my DS. Playing Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney and it’s the cutest/funniest logic game I’ve played in a minute.

Random other things I’ve been doing–multplaying Borderlands, Skate 3, and Soul Calibur V on my xbox with friends.

    Elder Scrolls Online!

First impressions are it’s a game I could spend a long, long time playing. There is a lot to do, the story is interesting and the character builds you can try out are so varied.

The character creator is fantastic. The level of customisation you have available to you is wonderful to play with. There are also several good options for afro-textured hair which is refreshing.

I’ve got a khajit with stabby knives, a dunmer burninator and an orc lady with a big, big sword so far!

Last week, I beat Infamous: Second Son on the hero path. I really enjoy the game. I have to set an alarm to contain my gaming habit with it. The new power sets are very unique and a lot of fun to learn. I am working on cleaning the city up of DUP and playing the free DLC.

While exploring I found some great non-spoiler images, I posted them to my Twitter account:

If you have a PS4, I would recommend this next-gen game. It will be weird to play Uncharted 3 and Last of Us after playing this game.

I am playing Dark Souls II, I just downloaded the new patch and I will continue getting the four souls I need. I have two of them already. Perhaps I will continue the new game I made on Persona 4 last week. I stopped in the middle of a long cutscene sequence so I have to replay a bit.
