What Are You Playing Wednesday

Toadette leading a race in Mario Kart 8

Toadette leading a race in Mario Kart 8

It is late on a Wednesday and time for some questions:

  • What games are you playing this week?
  • Would you recommend those games to other Border House readers?
  • What games have you ranting?
  • Are any of those games listed ones that you want to see covered on the site?

I am still in a busy time at work and so all I have played recently was Muramasa Rebirth and Mario Kart 8 with some friends.

What have you been playing?

Just PC gaming for me again. The games:

Ultima VII: The Black Gate. On my way to Britain! Still investigating the murder that took place in Jhelom just before I arrived in Britannia. This game is awesome.

Europa Universalis IV. Still learning how everything works. There’s a lot of depth to this game!

Battleblock Theater. On chapter 4 with Ike. Super fun!

Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos. Only a few hours in. I like it so far, hoping the story can keep my interest. Unfortunately, the game only seems to let me play as a man :x

Age of Empires III, Rogue Legacy. Just playing these to kill extra time when I don’t want to worry about anything.

What method are you using to play Ultima 7? A long time ago, I tried to play it on a computer that was way too fast for it. I liked being able to walk quickly, but the first time I encountered something hostile – a crocodile – the battle ended before I could react, and the crocodile and two of my party members were all dead.

    • Korva says:

Ultima! My first great love in gaming, and still one of the most influential series. Bloody damn shame about how it ended, though, parts VIII and IX aren’t even worth the name in my book because they did away with pretty much everything that made the series special. The Black Gate is fun, though. Have you spotted the little “up yours” from the Origin folks towards EA yet?

      • Llamaentity says:

Hehe I have not. I have now just arrived in Britain after having solved the case of the stolen venom in Paws. Does it come later or have I missed it? T.T Unless the Fellowship is a metaphor for EA…!

        • Korva says:

Ahh yes, it will be a while before you come across it, then. It’s a thing the Fellowship uses, three things to be precise.

Damn, now I want to replay VII and my other favourite Ultimas, too. I hope you’ll have lots of fun with it.

  2. Doug S. says:

I beat Flower, Sun, and Rain. As is somewhat typical of a Suda 51 game, it made almost no sense whatsoever.

  3. Kimiko says:

Sorcery Saga still. I’m finally done going through all the equipment. Now I just have to craft a really good sword and I’m ready to go finish the game. How many months have I been playing this now? I lost count..

    • Llamaentity says:

It’s been quite a while! But yay that you’re almost done. I don’t think I could stick with such a long grind, but I admire you being able to do so. What are you going to play next?

      • Kimiko says:

Update: crafted that ultimate sword, got the last magic maxed, now going through the post-game dungeon. Floor 16 of 256..

Yeah, the main game went pretty quick, and wasn’t too hard after I got used to the rogue-like way again, so I thought I’d go for platinum. I kinda underestimated how long it would take to complete the item book and how boring that would be.
On the other hand, I have been making good progress in reducing my anime backlog : )

After I finish Sorcery Saga, I have Danganronpa (Vita) lying around, and I wanted to play the .hack games after seeing Laquidara play them. Oh, and Muramasa Rebirth (Vita) is on my wish-list. Maybe I should finally go through some of those many VN and RPG games sitting in my Downloads directory.
        Uh, in other words, I haven’t decided yet.. ^_^;

        • Llamaentity says:

Ah cool. I want Danganronpa! Looks neat.

What anime have you been watching? I just finished Knights of Sidonia and One Week Friends, got caught up on Baby Steps, and now catching up on Haikyu!! and Yowapeda. Yes, I’ve been mostly obsessed with sports anime lately >.<

My anime backlog is about as long as my video game backlog T.T

          • Kimiko says:

Oh my. I’ve been watching a lot of anime lately.
            In the last two months:
Fantastic Children – neat setup, drawn-out plot, meh characterization
Diamond Daydreams – good, bought it
            Uta~Kata – fanservicey and a meh ending
Gasaraki – dropped after 3 eps.
Boogiepop Phantom – depressing and confusing
Patema Inverted – interesting background, but mediocre plot and characterization
PreCure 5 GoGo – the worst of the first five PreCure seasons
Hidamari Sketch (Sae&Hiro Graduation) – two more eps. to HS×Honeycomb
Tamayura ~more aggressive~ – not as good as the first season, but still very nice
Lyrical Nanoha The Movie A’s – got it on BD
Natsume Yūjinchō S3&4 – a little more action and melancholy than the first two seasons, on the to-buy list
Kurokami – dropped after 10 eps.
Polyphonica – dropped after 3 eps.
            Ga-Rei Zero – dropped after 5 eps.
Only Yesterday – okay, but wouldn’t watch again
Girl Who Leapt Through Space – currently watching

If you’d like to read more of my thoughts on anime, you can check out my ANN lists.

            • Llamaentity says:

Cool. I liked Fantastic Children quite a bit, personally :P Also, Boogiepop Phantom!

I’m on season 3 of Natsume Yuujinchou at the moment. I just watch an episode every now and then, though. I like the series quite a bit but never feel too compelled to keep watching. Mushishi, on the other hand… well, it’s one of my favorites, though I don’t usually like episodic series quite so much.

Other random stuff I’m at least several episodes into:

Bamboo Blade; Fairy Tale; Monster; Ace of the Diamond; SDF Macross; Ano Natsu de Matteru; Gundam 00 S2; Rainbow; Nagi no Asukara; Strike the Blood; My Ordinary Life; Tokyo Ghoul; Ouran Koukou Host Club; Shirokuma Cafe; Hunter x Hunter… and some other random crap.

              I watch a lot, too T.T

Some of it is terrible (Strike the Blood), and some is very good (Monster, Rainbow). Most of the others are just good time wasters. I don’t usually watch simulcasts (Tokyo Ghoul), but I’m enjoying this one quite a bit. I prefer to wait until a series is over, as my tastes are varied and thus my backlog is enormous. I have the bad habit of not dropping a series, even if it’s bad, which doesn’t really help. :’p

            • Kimiko says:

Bamboo Blade is good. One of the few sports anime I’ve watched; and liked enough to buy.
SDF Macross has some pacing issues, but is a good start if you want to watch all of Macross. If you go for that, watch the movie version of SDF too. It’ll make some minor details later on clearer. Otherwise I don’t think it replaces the series proper.
Nichijou is really funny. Nano and the prof. are so cute ^_^ If you want it on DVD you’ll have to import from Australia though.
Shirokuma Café is nice and relaxing. The first OP and fourth ED were the best :)

I don’t watch series while they are broadcast anymore. I hate waiting a week every time.
As for dropping series, I didn’t use to do that unless an anime was really bad, but I’m less patient now because I want to reduce my backlog and not waste time on something that annoys me.

            • Llamaentity says:

Hope I’m replying in the right spot! Indeed, everything about Nichijou is just oozing cuteness! And yeah I like Bamboo Blade so far. I tend to just gobble up sports anime left and right sometimes XD

I drop video games all the time… I need to adopt the same principles to my anime watching habits. :P

Also, I wish we could still subscribe to posts here on theborderhouse. It’s been mysteriously missing since that time the site was down for a bit a few months ago :’c

          • Doug S. says:

Danganronpa is decent. Not as good as the Phoenix Wright series, but it’s a reasonably entertaining mystery story.

  4. Chris Hill says:

I finished The Last of Us at the weekend. I mainly liked it, but still mulling over what I think of the ending.

I’ve gone back to Sly Cooper 2, which I’d put aside some time ago. Quite fun much of the time but with some weird difficulty spikes. I do find the voice acting rather annoying after a while so if I have to repeat a section I tend to mute the sound!

Also still playing a bit of Skyrim in between.

    • Llamaentity says:

Grats on finishing the Last of Us. I’m pretty far in my playthrough of it, but it feels like a drag every time I try to play… I just don’t find the gameplay to be fun. I do like the story bits and the dialogue when you’re exploring around each area, though.

I’ve never played a Sly Cooper game. Are you playing it on Vita?

      • Chris Hill says:

It took me two attempts to get into Last of Us – you definitely do not want to play it when you’re already in a bad mood!

I’m playing the Sly Cooper game on PS3 from the PSN HD version.

  5. Lassarina says:

I’ve been charging straight ahead in FF14 (I got to Titan and oh my god the subsequent plot event that was aggressively not okay); I’m level 38 on my main class.

I beat House of 1,000 Doors – Family Secrets on Steam, and I’ve been playing Anodyne as well. It’s fascinating, but I’m really stuck after the second dungeon and cannot figure out how to get to the third one. I’m sure I just missed something obvious, but it’s so frustrating, and I’m not accustomed to playing a game and not being able to find a half-decent guide anywhere on the Internet. (All I can find is “where to find the cards” which is really not what I need right now!)
