What Are You Playing Wednesday

The main character from Paladog: a paladin dog.

It is time for our usual roundup of questions:

  • What games have you been playing lately?
  • Are there any you would recommend to other Border House readers?
  • Are there games that have you ranting or raving?
  • Are there any games that you played and want to see covered on the site?

This was another week where I played a lot of multiplayer games with friends: Iron Brigade and Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. Otherwise, I started playing Paladog on the website http://www.kongregate.com/, a site that hosts a variety of free to play games. Paladog is a strategy game where you play a paladin dog that controls an army of creatures such as bunny archers or bomb throwing monkey pirates. I have been having a lot of fun with that game.

So, what have you been playing?

I’m very close to finishing Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky. My party is sneaking into the bad guys’ lair for the final showdown. Last week’s news included a license announcement for the anime sequel to this game, which I’m now eager to see.

More Minecraft. I found gold, redstone and enough diamonds for a pickaxe and an enchanting table, which really gave me a motivation boost., though I still feel the game could have a bit more variety in critters and resources. Now I’m pondering whether to use my newly-mined obsidian to make a Nether Portal, or to just explore a bit. I seem to be stuck pretty much on the edge of a continent with ocean on two sides, luckily there were plenty of cows and chickens nearby as well as a few wolves to tame, but the acquisition of sheep required a long hike south, one night in a dirt hole and another bobbing up and down in the ocean while a storm raged overhead because I didn’t want to fight in the dark with my slowpoke livestock in tow.

Also, more Dwarf Fortress though that has been on the backburner a bit due to Minecraft. My fort has almost reached the population requirement for sieges, and I’m not even ready to fight ambushes fairly because I keep getting caught up in other things (like digging down~10 z-levels from my hilltop to make a nice cliff for a proper entrance). Gotta do something about that, or much Fun will be had shortly.

(Unlurking here for the first time — hello!)

I’ve just about finished my second playthrough of Mass Effect 1-3 — playing as (mostly) renegade, and romancing Garrus. I’ve sort of ground to a halt just before the final battle and can’t make myself actually finish it. I’ve also dipped into multiplayer a bit but find it quite intimidating, especially since I’m not very good at it.

I’ve played a bit of The Witcher, but it hasn’t really grabbed me so far.

I’ve also picked Dragon Age 2 up again with the intention of romancing Isabella on this one, but I think I played it rather too thoroughly last year.

So really, I’m at a bit of a loose end. A break might be good, mind you…

    • Korva says:

Hello and welcome. :) If you feel a bit stuck with or burned out on one genre, maybe there’s another that can occupy you for a bit?

  4. Jessamyn says:

Have any of you checked out Child of Eden? I played it a lot this past week, and find the combination of gameplay, art, and music to be really enjoyable. There’s no story worth mentioning, but it’s an really beautiful game.

    • Alex says:

My partner just picked up a Kinect, so I’ve been meaning to check it out. It looks really pretty. Did you play it with kinect and if so, did it work?

  5. Henson says:

Mount & Blade. Riding down the Nords like the barbarians they are. None can stop my mounted Mongol hordes!

And yet, despite crushing the Nords, my Khan won’t take the trouble to siege their last standing city. It’s right there, dude! We’re so close!

Someone needs to make me marshall.

  6. Twyst says:

Hopefully finishing up Dragon’s Dogma – i am at the dragon, not looking to play NG+ right now.
    Also, the Secret World!

  7. glitchy says:

I started replaying Persona 4 (it was a couple years ago that I went through it the first time). I’m hoping playing on a new game + will help me max most or all of the social links this time through.

Right now, I’ve just gotten to the part where Kanji comes into the story. I’m pretty excited, because I love Kanji. He’s the greatest. <3

  8. Nefa says:

I’m on a puzzle game kick right now. Finished up the main set in Splice, and now I’m working on Auditorium. They’re both beautifully done games in my opinion, minimalistic UI and puzzles that are interesting and challenging not to the point of keyboard breaking.

For RP – been back working on Guild Wars in prep for Guild Wars 2 release at end of August!

    • Alex says:

Guild Waaaaars! I really need to finish Eye of the North before GW2 launches…

      • Nefa says:

If you’re a lore nerd I’d recommend it. The conclusion of it kinda leads into guild wars 2. I think past there the books bridge but I have not read them yet!

I’ve been doing more fanart drawing then playing! XD I had the same thing happen with FFXI.

        • Alex says:

Haha, I played FFXI also (the only two MMOs I’ve really played). *zooms off to your deviantArt*

        • rho says:

There are two books so far, and I believe there’s meant to be a third at some point, though they’ll have to be quick about that if they’re planning on getting it out before the launch. The two that are out so far are, to my mind, more like a prologue to GW2 than a proper bridge; both are set very much in the GW2 time-frame, and set the scene for it.

The books are fairly standard game-tie-in sort of thing. Neither of them are going to win any literary prizes, but they’re fun enough if you’re not looking for something that’s going to stretch your brain. Of the two, I prefer Edge of Destiny (the second one).

          • Nefa says:

I’ve read a few reviews on the novels. I’m thinking about grabbing them. Since I’ve been slogging through the Song of Ice and Fire series, would be good to have a break. Haha XD

What’s interesting is that, my friend pointed out while we were playing the GW2 beta, that GW2 manages to explain some elements in GW1 better then GW1 did (relating to the charr, and the searing).

I’m somewhat excited to see when/if Kourna makes it into GW2.

  9. Doug S. says:

Magic Online, SWTOR, Etrian Odyssey 3, and the Disgaea 3 postgame.

  10. SleekitSicarian says:

Wrapped up Spec Ops: The Line (really dug the music and story; it’s funny how the latter can really key you up during firefights) and am now diving back into Skyrim for a bit of a stroll before tackling Max Payne 3. At first glance I really dislike the complete shift away from norse mythology and winter imagery, but I guess I want to wrap up the series.

    • SleekitSicarian says:

Edit: How the *former* can, rather. Sigh. What I get for posting when I’m tired.

  11. Llamaentity says:

Mostly iOS gaming, with some Lost Horizon (still) here and there. Really, really hoping to finish that one soon, so I can move onto another adventure game, finally (so many to choose from once I’m done!) I’ve been such a slacker when it comes to finishing games lately :’c

On iOS, it’s been Cubis Creatures, Soosiz, Ant Raid, and Rinth Island. All are pretty fun.

  12. rho says:

I finally, finally, finally got around to playing Dreamfall beyond the second act, and actually finished it. Not a bad game, but the original was much better.

  13. Lassarina says:

I finished off FFXIII-2, and went back to Infinite Undiscovery, which has the unfortunate distinction of having some of the worst-written female characters I’ve ever encountered. (Basically I’m far enough in that I want to just finish it off and then never think of it again.)

I also picked up Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy and it is painfully adorable. I saw a reviewer who said (paraphrasing for lack of exact quote) “if you have an emotional connection to the music of the FF games, you’ll love it; otherwise you’ll find it mediocre” and that seems to be quite accurate: I’ve loved every level except FF11, which I’ve never played and cannot be bothered to care about. It is adorable and the track selection is great, and they took pains to make the rhythm bits match the track rather than artificially flailing about for difficulty’s sake. I’m nearly done the “series”, which is to say three tracks per main-series game (just FF13 to go, as I’ve done them in order), and then we’ll see about the other modes.

Still creeping forward quite slowly on Ash II: Shadows on my iPhone and Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom on the PSP.

  14. vk says:

Playing Persona 3 Portable again. I’ve previously owned it but I like digital copies for my portables so I picked up thanks to a recent psn sale.

I’m a huge fan of Atlus developed games, so I already didn’t need much of a reason to replay it; but the girl protagonist is so much fun compared to the boy, that I couldn’t resist another chance to kick ass and tell Junpei to shut up and quit being an idiot.

    • Alex says:

I just finished P3P for the first time the other day. I can’t wait to replay as the female character and tell Junpei to shut up xD

    • Olivia says:

Junpei is really just the worst. Not gonna lie, when people say that they find Junpei to be the most relate-able of the P3 crew, I judge them a ‘lil.

      • vk says:

ouch, i’ve been lucky to never hear someone say that. I’ll admit I don’t actively dislike him though, since he does gradually get better; maybe by the time he’s in his mid-20s, he’ll be a decent person.

…maybe people can relate to him because he’s a pretty typical teenager. he’s got a bunch of stupid opinions and is constantly trying to get laid.

  15. Alex says:

After playing the ME3 Extended Cut (I… liked the original ending better ^^;;; ) and finishing P3P, I’m going back to my QFG replay (in honor of the games coming out on GoG). I’m still on the QFG2 VGA remake, but I’m nearing the final few days, which are one of the most awesome endgame sequences in a game.

    • rho says:

Hurrah! I liked the original version better as well! It’s good to know that there’s at least one other person out there.

      • Alex says:

We can start a club with Kate and Evan from Kotaku xD

Going into the Extended Cut, I thought it would be interesting to have more stuff explained, but as I was playing it I realized I really didn’t need it all spelled out, and I liked the more open-ended ending better.

  16. Sunatic says:

Been browsing Armor Games for anything interesting. Yesterday I finished Amea and Jelly Escape. They were pretty good. And Amea once again made me feel all warm and fuzzy by having a badass female main character. Where mainstream games fail, indie games thrive.
