[Giveaway] Dungeons of Dredmor – a game by a studio that ‘gets it’

A screenshot from Dungeons of Dredmor, a retro-styled roguelike dungeon exploration RPG game available on Steam.

We’ve talked about Dungeons of Dredmor here before, and we were honored when the developers from Gaslamp Games chimed in within our comments section to talk about how important being inclusive to women is to them as game creators.  So it’s absolutely no surprise to see this wonderful post about how they combated sexism and misogyny on their official forums recently.

Here’s a couple of quotes from David Baumgart, Art Director for Gaslamp Games:

I won’t stand for this bloody stupid sandwich “joke” that marginalizes female players involvement in this community (and, like, life in general).  It’s precisely the opposite of the kind of environment that we here at Gaslamp want to create.

And, in case you don’t want to give them a huge high five yet…

Now that I’ve, weirdly, been part of making a game and it’s got a forum, I’m not going to tolerate a tone that alienates anyone traditionally disempowered by gaming communities, be it women, GLBT folk, etc, – even unconsciously. Hence my insta-rage and banning.

At The Border House, we have huge amounts of respect for Gaslamp Games for the kind of community they’re growing and want to acknowledge that.  I can only buy so many copies of Dungeons of Dredmor for myself, though, so I want to share the love!

If you’d like a copy of the game and you have Steam, comment below with your Steam ID.  I’ll pick 5 or so people at random and give you a copy of the game.  I want to give Gaslamp as much money as possible to support a developer who is making a real effort in dismantling the marginalization that happens in gaming.  This is what we’re ALL ABOUT here.

Comment below for a chance to win! :)

Edit: I forgot to mention the deadline.  I’ll pick the winner sometime on Tuesday 9/4 in U.S. time. :)

  1. Wow, that developer is awesome. I have never played a roguelike before, but this seems like the right one to play. I was going to leave my Steam ID, but I just realized I already have it in my Steam library. Must of picked it up from the summer sale.

  2. I always liked Gaslamp Games, and it’s good to see they still care about these important issues. Cool that you’re running this promotion, too!

I already own the game, so count me out of the drawing, just wanted to add my support for this developer. And to honor this occasion, I think I’ll play some Dungeons of Dredmor. It’s been a while but I suddenly have the urge XD

  3. I’ll take it for free, but I’ll buy it if not. I want to support companies that do the right thing. My Steam ID is chef_mireille. And I don’t even cook!

  4. I think I’m not the only one who bought this game when Border House announced the female character and one of the devs popped in to comment. And now this. Big, big thumbs up and thank you, Gaslamp, in case any of you see this. Your approach both to the creation of the female character and the handling of this situation are a stellar example to the rest of the industry.

Not to mention that the game is a whole lot of good fun. :) I can only encourage people to try and win it, or if they don’t get lucky, buy it themselves.

  5. My steam id is vapidhonorific, although if I don’t get one for free I will buy this game so much.
And if I have the money I might gift some around ^_^

  6. My ID is corpset. I’d love a copy, one of the few games I can play on a mac, and the developers seem awesome :)

  7. Nicholas Vining of Gaslamp Games gave a great talk on the writing in Dungeons of Dredmor at Casual Connect in Seattle last month – you can see the video here: http://casualconnect.org/lectures/design/congratulations-you-died-humorous-writing-for-dungeons-of-dredmor-nicholas-vining/

He calls out and lambasts the AAA industry for using rape jokes at 13:40 ish. He also discusses adding the female hero and her practical outfit at 44:00 – including a shout out for the Border House!

  8. How awesome is David Baumgart?! As a woman who was into gaming before Berners-Lee created this precious gem called www, I was (fortunately) able to develop my geek girl self esteem before the misogynistic masses voiced their medieval opinions. I feel sad for girls who are turned off gaming by boys’ behavior now. Ah, the good old times. (Mind you, I wouldn’t have been allowed to marry my wife back then so I’m be glad it’s 2012. ;))

Anyway: I’d love to win this. My steam ID is feylamia.

  9. Good idea, but give it to someone else, because I’m going to buy it for myself and join in with supporting them as a company :-)

  10. I’ve had my eye on Dredmor for awhile now, but didn’t have any money in the games budget. After flailingly trying to address heterosexism in college science classes (both as a student and TA), I could use an equitable diversion… Count me in for the drawing!

(P.S. Longtime lurker, first time commenter… Hi, all!)

  11. So great to see someone actively fighting against this garbage; that alone makes me want to support this game. My Steam ID is No1There.

  12. My ID is acidrica

I’ll probably be buying the game even if I don’t get picked. It sounds awesome.

  13. This is really positive to read, especially when news about the gaming industry outright dismissing women is so rampant (ugh, girlfriend mode in Borderlands 2).

    Steam ID: Gothamite

  14. I’d love a chance to win this. (It’s even available on the Mac!) My steamID is sybylla18.

    Thanks for the opportunity.
