What Are You Playing Wednesday

One of my Guild Wars 2 characters. A blue skinned Sylvari with navy blue hair.

Happy Wednesday, all! It is time for our weekly questions:

  • What games have you been playing lately?
  • Are there any you would recommend to other Border House readers?
  • Are there games that have you ranting or raving?
  • Are there any games that you played and want to see covered on the site?

I have been playing a lot of MMORPGs this week. I got back into World of Warcraft in preparation for the upcoming expansion. I also started playing Guild Wars 2 and I love it so far! That game is gorgeous.

So, what have you been playing?

  1. I’m playing the original Darksiders, which is fun but formulaic (as in, it draws on every formula ever conceived) and Thirty Flights of Loving, which is excellent.

Guild Wars Twooooooooo. I made a Sylvari, too, an elementalist. Currently level 21, working my way through Brisban Wildlands. This is what she looks like! http://twitpic.com/anpy2a

  3. Denis Farr says:

Likewise with the Guild War 2 love. Have created a character of ever race, with my sylvari mesmer and human necromancer being my main two (the former is the actual main).

    Screenshot!

    Greatsword-wielding, mask-wearing sylvari mesmer.

      Very spiffy looking character!

I just made an asura mesmer. She is my cutest character by far. She is just adorable.

Tell me more about GW2!! I want to try and test it out during a free weekend or something. I can’t afford to play two MMOs, so I didn’t buy it. I’m still playing WoW. Our guild is gearing up for the expansion and trying to get the last two heroic bosses down before Mists. The new healing/talent system is different, and I feel like discipline priests (my favorite healing class) got hit with a fuzzy stick. :( Maybe I’m just doing it wrong.

I bought Morrowind. I tried to play it but the graphics are pretty awful compared to games nowadays. All it did was make me want to play Skyrim. So, I did.

    • Sabrina says:

What do you mean with “afford”? If it’s the money, GW2 doesn’t have a monthly fee. You buy the game and play forever. If it’s the time, GW2 is casual friendly. You don’t have huge raids that need weeks and weeks of dedicated group effort. You also don’t have gear wars where you have to farm for weeks and months to get the best of the best gear. High end armour is mostly for the looks and relatively easy to come by.
The worst thing I could say about GW2 is that once you’re playing it’s kinda hard to stop cause you’ll be like one of those rat-like Skritt (a npc-race) they have. These little critters are adorable and easily distracted by shiny things – and this is basically everyone who starts playing the game. Everywhere you turn there’s something new to discover and as you run off to see new shiny things the hours will fly by. ;)

Our characters look quite alike. :P

  6. Laurentius says:

I started GW2 and as GW veteran I can say I am not that mightily impressed, sure it’s pretty and fun but it is also very much like WoW then its actual predecessor. I miss deck skill building and it being skill orientated then level orientated but especially I miss missions this was such a nice concept of structurizing mmo game.

  7. Lassarina says:

I’m nearly done S-ranking every single thing in Theatrhythm (every Basic and Ultimate song and series, all Expert challenges, working my way through Expert series which is pathetically easy after Ultimate.) Finally unlocked all the characters and hoping to finally be able to think about something else.

Meanwhile I went back to Ash II: Shadows on iOS, which is far, FAR friendlier than its predecessor about my habit of dropping a game for weeks and then coming back trying to figure out where I was.

I just started Hexyz Force (PSP) and while I find Cecilia grating, I find her grating in the way that she is a realistic frustrated teenager who isn’t really that interested in saving the world and doesn’t get why it’s gotta be her job. (I also love that this game has two storylines, one with a male lead and one with a female lead, though given the male lead is a knight I’ll probably wind up rolling all over him with glee.)

And I’ve been playing Chrono Cross, as part of tackling my epic backlog. One of my goals this year was to beat at least two of my PS2-or-earlier games, and this is the first of those. I picked Nikki’s route into Viper Manor, and I’m sure it says a lot about when I discovered J-rock that my reaction to him is “you are so Malice Mizer.” But I’m really enjoying the game, and I can see why it was so popular. :)

  8. Korva says:

GW2 here as well. My first character is a sylvari guardian, now level 24 and getting kicked around a lot in the second zone. Ranged enemies in particular are lethal when they come in groups. But if I stay at range, I still get hit a lot and I do even less damage. (And yes, I move all the time.) So that was definitely a bit of a rude awakening. I gotta figure out how to play her properly, now.

I also have a norn ranger, charr warrior and sylvari elementalist all at level 6 or 7 and on hold until my friends decide what they’d like to play together.

  9. SwadianKnight says:

I’m playing The Last Story on the Wii, and it is quite surprisingly enjoyable. I mean, the story is really trite, but the gameplay is aces: the combat system is dynamic and deep, and the cover system actually complements its speed rather than bog it down.

  10. Ike says:

Played through Supermagical on iPad. It was almost the Bubble Bobble-type arcade/puzzle game I was looking for, with the exception of a fat-phobic plot point.

  11. Timmy_Mac614 says:

Just fired Hard Corps Rising again. I am finally getting good at that game. Plus, there is nothing quite like a dude with hot pink flare on his attire and weaponry.

Making progress in Bioshock and Mass Effect 2 as well. Unfortunately, life keeps getting in the way. Stupid life.

  12. lian says:

Radiant Historia for the DS! I’m very much enjoying the surprisingly deep writing and interesting characters. Stocke is….so eminently SENSIBLE. I love it.

  13. Momiji says:

I’ve been playing Mass Effect, wrapping up my 3d playthrough and playing the Leviathan DLC released yesterday, which was really good! For once, Shepards LI gets automatically prioritized in cutscenes and conversations, which made me a happy gamer indeed! There was also a lot of squad banter and the shuttle pilot Cortez got his crowning moment of awesome.

But now, I feel like taking a long break from the ME-series, so I can come back to it when it feels fresh again. I’m not sure what to play next, but it might be time to pick up KotOR or Skyward Sword again, both of which I’ve only played a little yet.

  14. I’m currently splitting my time between another run of The World Ends With You (to console myself after that terrible sequel hype letdown) and my ongoing quest to finally finish a freaking Final Fantasy game, dammit.

I’ve moved on to XIII, and I’m enjoying it, even though it’s such a weird mix of great (combat, music, setting) and godawful (level design, pacing, script). My biggest peeve about it at the moment is the way the Crystarium is rigidly tiered and locked: as soon as I started Chapter 6, for instance, I was able to max out Sazh’s and Vanille’s Crystaria right from the start, leaving me without the fun of progression through the whole (frustrating) level.

I really like the combat, though. I’m always a fan of learning an entirely new combat system from scratch, and the paradigms make it feel more like a rhythm game than an RPG – in a good way.

  15. Ashera says:

Picked up Dungeons of Dredmor again, reminded by the recent thread about their awesome forum moderation. I was happy to see that the pocket dimension is available without getting the newest expansion pack (which I will get eventually). Inspired by the blog post, I’ve started trying to win with a random build. Vampire and Killer Vegan are showing up more often than I expect, but Vampire-Werediggle is working out surprisingly well.

[FYI: Gunthera's character, whilst certainly cool-looking, probably wasn't supposed to be the new site header? Xe is at time/posting (~10:30 US Eastern, 29 Aug 2012)]

Might do Diablo 2 multiplayer this weekend. GW2 certainly seems well-liked but unless its hardware requirements are a lot less than GTA:SA, I haven’t the computer available to run it. :-( E>

    Glad everyone’s having fun, though.

    • gunthera1 says:

Oops. I checked something I shouldn’t have when I uploaded the photo. let me go fix that.

  17. Negative Kat says:

GW2, too. I’m only level 15 with my Charr engineer; I have trouble playing games for long stretches of time, but it’s a lot of fun so far. I’m flat broke because I became intrigued by cooking; my entire inventory is full of onion rings, blueberry cookies, and random ingredients that don’t go together that I had to buy anyway (just in case!) My boyfriend is already around level 50, and it pleases me that I’ve found several recipes that he hasn’t.

So, mainly I’m just stumbling into group events while I’m out looking for things to harvest. Now if only I can get myself this interested in real cooking. ;p

  18. Ryan says:

Just wrapped up playing the final quests they put into GW1 (got a nice tormented weapon out of it) and waiting for my new gaming rig to arrive next week so I can enjoy GW2 in all of its gaming splendor.

  19. Chris Hill says:

Still working my way through Lego Batman 2. Finished the main campaign in Story Mode (it’s actually rather shorter than the previous games.) Now toddling around Gotham City picking up Gold Bricks and just starting to play the campaign in free mode to pick up what I missed. In what has been a very stressful few weeks, it’s very relaxing!

Also started ‘Gray Matter’ on the Xbox360, but not really picked it up the last few days.

  20. Kimiko says:

Still playing Final Fantasy VI. I just got the airship in the World Of Ruin, so things are looking up for our party. When I get Gau back I’ll have to spend ages on the Veldt again because there are so many new monsters for him to learn.

I looked into Guild Wars 2 some more, and good news, it seems that it will work very well on Linux with Wine. I’m holding off until the next update of Wine, which will probably have some fixes specifically for GW2, but then I’m definitely going to join y’all :)

  21. Maya_Mayhem says:

Still totally addicted to Path of Exile… even in closed beta its already one of the best games I have ever played.

Every few days I log in to The Secret World just to tinker about and see what new content they have added or what they’ve fixed, but I just cant stay interested enough for it to pull me away from PoE… which is too bad considering PoE is in closed beta and has one last character wipe coming, and TSW is pay per month and already paid for. Not much I can do though, I’m pretty impulsive with my gaming habits, and do not like change, especially when it takes away from something I am really loving :)

    • Chris Hill says:

I played 10-odd hours on Secret World when it came out and I like it a lot. But I do tend to gravitate towards solo games most of the time.

Maybe I need to admit that I’m just not an MMO gamer and delete them all off my machine…

  22. evilsatu says:

I’ve been playing bits of this and bits of that — some Skyrim, some Bioshock, some Mass Effect 3 and quite a bit of Glitch. I am very tempted to get GW2 just as soon as I have a bit of money in the gaming budget again…

  23. Llamaentity says:

Dungeons of Dredmor and League of Legends on the PC.

On iOS, Spin Up, Paracute, McPixel, One Epic Knight, Mikey Shorts, Box Cat, The Curse, Ichi, Beat Sneak Bandit, OneTapHero, and Velocispider. All have been pretty fun, especially Spin Up, Paracute, and Mikey Shorts. McPixel is an interesting take on the point-and-click adventure game, and I look forward to playing more of it (have only had time for 10 of the game’s 100 levels). You have 20 seconds to stop a bomb from exploding in each stage, and the solutions are generally rather amusing so far.

  24. Timmy_Mac614 says:

Quick question: I haven’t seen any Borderhouse Blog posts promoting Gaymercon Kickstarter. Is there a reason for that?
